Education Secretary visit
Delivering a talk on the importance of languages in the Arsenal changing room at Emirates Stadium with Education Secretary, Damian Hinds MP, and pupils from Sheffield Park Academy
In June 2019, Education Secretary, Damian Hinds MP, visited the Arsenal Double Club project at Emirates Stadium.
Hinds joined pupils from Sheffield Park Academy for a language-themed tour of the stadium. He was full of praise for the scheme, saying he’d been “really inspired” by what he’d seen, and that he was “on a mission to get more children learning languages.”
In a statement on the Department for Education website, Hinds added: “This is a fantastic initiative that really brings to life how fun and useful learning a language can be by harnessing the diversity and popularity of football. We’re making good progress in encouraging more pupils to take languages, with the proportion taking a language at GCSE rising from 40% to 46% since 2010, but there is still more to do to persuade more young people to choose languages.”
